In Pursuit Of Happiness

"There comes a time when a man has to ask himself whether he wants a life of happiness or a life of meaning….(they’re) two very different paths… To be truly happy a man must live absolutely in the present. No thought of what has gone before and no thought of what lies ahead… but a for a life of meaning, a man is condemned to wallow in the past and obsess about the future."

I guess I'm living a life of meaning after all.

What kind of life are you living?

ako rin, I've been living a meaningful life pala.

Alam ko ung scene na yan. That's Linderman talking to Nathan Petrelli in the kitchen. That's where he also showed his power of healing. Tama?

mine maybe is life of happiness.. forget the bad things happenned before and not to worry about what the future brings..

Hmm.. not a day passes without me thinking about my future. So I guess I'm living a life of meaning.

I dunno, siguro I'm not satisfied with the life I'm living right now. Don't get me wrong though, I'm happy.. I just think I could do better. :)

I would say life of happiness as of now, I take nothing for granted I have only great days.

There comes a time... when we heed a certain call...

I don't like the word condemned. It seems so tragic to lead a life of meaning.

I lead a life of meaning and I am enjoying every minute of it. Would that mean I'm masochistic?

Sabi nga ni Dumbledore, we have a choice between a life of right, or a life of easy. Leading a life of right can be both meaningful and, yes sometimes, happy.

sadly, meaning.

...i'm living a life driven by purpose...

and that purpose is?? I'm still seeking for it... cause I want a life to be lived according to the purpose why God has created me...

and I believe I'm on a bit of my purpose now, choosing the harder road, following God, and doing His will..

and when I successfully accomplish that purpose, I believe life will truly live with a meaning and with God, a complete happiness...

one of my "crap" argued that loneliness is a promise. and a loneliness that ends is a promise fulfilled. (the future)

or is it that loneliness is a promise broken a long time ago, you just don't notice it. (past)

i guessed your piece is correct. live in the present..probably because it is something we really have and only have.

thank you.

@ BOB:

But it doesn’t mean we’re living an un-happy life isn’t it? According nga to Aristotle, “Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.” It is possible to live a life of both meaning and purpose after all. Or is it?

~And yup bob. The quote’s from Linderman. Heroes fan ka din bob? =) Yata!!!

@RHONZKIE:

That’s good to hear rhonzkie! I’ve always thought that as a cynic, it has become my nature to wallow over things that have happened in the past, to *not let go of things that needs letting go, and to wander about the possibilities of my actions and inactions.

“We choose hope over despair, possibilities over problems, optimism over cynicism.”

@JHED:

As for my case, I’m stuck with thinking about my past. I guess I’m the least proactive person that I know of. The least satisfying thing about that --- knowing that I still haven’t even changed a bit. And change is something I desperately need in my life.

I guess satisfaction does not always equate to or lead to happiness. We could be happy yet unsatisfied, or satisfied but unhappy. It’s all a matter of perspective. And yup, jhed, we could always do better. =)

@COLDMAN:

“Success, happiness, peace of mind and fulfillment - the most priceless of human treasures - are available to all among us, without exception, who make things happen - who make "good" things happen - in the world around them.”

Congrats on your great days coldman!

@KIKS:

“… when the world must come together as one?”

If living a life of meaning means abandoning the things that will make you happy, in the end you’ll get to realize that what you have ultimately gained is definitely far better from what you have left behind. And if forsaking those things will help you achieve greater ends, it doesn’t mean that you’re masochistic. It means that you’re noble. For you know what you really want and you’ve done everything to reach it.

I believe in the maxim that “Nothing in this world that’s worth having comes easy,” and so far it has worked well for me. I prefer hurdles over expediency, challenges over comfort. Masochistic, probably. But happy definitely.

@YOSHKE:

“I believe that the very purpose of our life is to seek happiness. That is clear. Whatever we believe in xxxx, we all are seeking something better in life. So, I think, the very motion of our life is towards happiness…”

It wouldn’t be all that sad after all.

@JAZZY 4 JESUS:

Amen.

I only have one goal in life, and that is to hear someone utter me these words:
“Everyone has a purpose on this earth, and I think you have found yours.”

And though that *purpose is still something I don’t know for now. I just hope, and pray, that before my existence in this world comes to an end, I will get to know whatever it is. No matter how trivial, or profound *that may be.

Pursuing the road less travelled is a tortuous and complicated path. And I know that what you’re doing is not at all easy. I admire people like you who are willing to search for that destination. That decision is very valiant of you, albeit an unpopular or ostracized one.

And I know you’ll get to accomplish that mission jazzy. As what He promised: “Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

@DAVENPORT:

I used to believe that everything in this world happens for a reason. And whatever that purpose may be, it is supposed to teach us something. To make us realize the value of certain things in life. And to be thankful for even having had the chance to experience them.

I guess loneliness is a promise that good things will definitely come. As to when? That is a thing only you and Him knows.

I agree with your point davenport. I’ve never even thought of that. As an optimist, I am compelled to approve with your former proposition but don’t you think it’s a little bit reassuring? But then again, it would be better to hope for the best than to wander aimlessly and drown in self-pity isn’t it?

Cherish the moment, live in the present, search for the meaning behind the existence, and be thankful for it all.

You’re welcome.

No problem tactology. My post made me re-think of my life as well. And thinking is one thing I’m not really good at. =)

@KING DADDY RICH:

Thanks kingdaddy. I admire those people who actually live in the present. Those who have the guts to leave their cares behind, to draw stuffs outside the box, and to cross the lines and leave boundaries aside. For short, to do the things that will guarantee my happiness.

Thank you for inspiring me too. And enjoy that lithe carefree life king daddy. Be happy.

@SKELETON COLLECTOR:

I think I’m living a meaningful life, though not necessarily a happy one. But at the end of the day, it will suffice.

Happiness is relative, and so is satisfaction. Para sa akin, masaya ako dahil sa maraming bagay --- good health, friends, and families --- pero ang categorical definition ko ng happiness is to “be able to live my life to the fullest.” Alam kong matagal pa ang lalakbayin ko para marating yun pero bawat kilos na nagawa ko na alam kong nakatulog sa pagkamit ko ng kaligayahang iyon eh nagbibigay na rin sa akin ng ligaya.

Ang gulo no? Hehehe. =) Happy sembreak kalansay! And can’t wait to have your pasalubong! Hahaha.

ruff nurse-du-jour said...

@ICKA:

Living a life of meaning entails forsaking happiness, for happiness is only attainable when one has discovered his full potentials at a specified frame of time. One can’t be truly happy at the moment and even happier on the next because then you will realize that the past happiness isn’t a real one after all (that was in congruence with J Neil Garcia’s proposition).

I guess I could attain *that eternal happiness in the future when I’m in my deathbed and I’m surrounded by people whose lives I have changed. As for the moment, I could just try to survive this life of meaning, until I have found my true purpose in life.

“Learn to get in touch with the silence within yourself, and know that everything in life has purpose. There are no mistakes, no coincidences, all events are blessings given to us to learn from.”

Uhm, actually, I still don’t know what I’m looking for. Hahaha. But yeah, I guess I’m looking for a meaning after all.

hmmnn... i want to live my life as happy as i am at the present (like look for meaning why things are just as they are/were) but i also want to see some future and perhaps to eternal after life... :)

ruff nurse-du-jour said...

@JOSH: every time i try to look for happiness i usually get disappointed for i realize how fleeting those moments are, but every time i look for a meaning, for purpose, for a definition, i usually end up satisfied and contented, not the short, ephemeral kind, but a lasting feeling of personal fulfillment.

i may be hard to please, and i might be the least jovial person that i know, but at least i'm proud to say that i'm not the type of person who seeks definition for what i do, but the type whom you can define with the things i do.

i hate how sundays make me all-cranky and twisty inside.

by the way, have a great sunday josh! cheers!

Will it be bad for me to life of hapiness?

Are they two different path?

For me they are just the same...there is only one path in life comprising of two...the past and the future.

Kahit ano pa man ang gawin at isipin, the past and the future is still connected with the present.

In this world where nothing is absolute and everything is arbitrary, there is really no such thing as bad or good anymore. Well, at least for me.

And yup, there is just one path --- from the past, to the present, and up to the future. The problem starts when we become fixated on a single stage and we couldn't move on anymore. For the most of us, we least chose to live in the present.

I live because I would have to die.

Brave, brave man. A first one for me to hear such nihilistic insights mcrey! =)

Ako naman, I tend to take things in stride. Mahirap kasing magmadali because sometimes you tend to just see things superficially and do not see what they're worth. Sometimes these small things are those that can bring us true happiness. Sounds like a cliche, right? But it works for me. =)

Maria said...

so are you saying that "happiness" is a much sought for destination?

how about the journey itself?see how everyone works to acquire happiness,and once they have it, it is even known to be fleeting.kya nga siguro it accounts na din for having a temporary place, the earth, kya happiness is never absolute.

Because in the end, after all the struggle and hardwork and when it is time to look back into your life, then you can finally say, hey! i did something good in this world.
and then you're happy.
ma getz ba logic ko? hheheheh
