Turn Back Time

One week has passed and despite the weather condition returning to normal, having my DSL services restored to its bliss-like grandeur is still eternities-away. But don’t fret. This catastrophe, indeed, has a therapeutic purpose. It made me cherish long waits, appreciate how webcams and eyeball addicts in a computer shop have become inseparable entities, and taught me that patience, undeniably, is a virtue.

This post will be about: a Music Meme (which I incredibly enjoyed), my take on an Emmy nomination for a Filipino show (a first in Philippine programming), and why Bandila holds such precious memories in my heart.

Music Meme

Immediately after I’ve read this post from Saisho, I quickly turned my iPod on, and tried this meme faster than a man with premature ejaculation could even reach his climax.

The RULES couldn’t be any simpler:
1. Put Your iTunes, Windows Media Player, etc on SHUFFLE Mode,
2. For each question, press the next button to get your answer, and
3. YOU MUST WRITE DOWN THAT SONG NAME NO MATTER HOW GAY IT SOUNDS.

But I added a personal twist, I listed down both (1) what song played and (2) what would be my ideal answer. This is fun! Ready? Ready!

IF SOMEONE SAYS "IS THIS OKAY" YOU SAY?

Emmy Nominates “Bandila”

ABS-CBN late night newscast “Bandila(Banner/Flag) earned the
Philippinesfirst-ever Emmy Award nomination for its report on the promulgation of the Subic rape case last year. The US International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences picked the “Bandila” report over 800 nominations from around the world together with seven other finalists from the United Kingdom, Brazil, Romania, China, and Russia vying for the news and current affairs category for the International Emmy Awards (Source).

TV Patrol World, ABS-CBN flagship news and current affair show, made it to the top 8 but failed to pass through to the final screening.
This nomination will be another good reason to watch the Emmy’s this September. Bandila's nomination is not only a testament of the Filipino's high standard of media excellence, but is moreso a source of national pride--"sa ngalan ng bayan, sa ilalim ng nag-iisang Bandila."

Bandila and My Life Memories

I hold such fond memories of Bandila. When the Nurse’s Licensure controversy last June 2006 was in its impetus, Bandila, specifically the reporter Apples Jalandoni, was the first News/Current Affairs entity to contact me personally for a professional advice and personal opinion. I prophesized with certainty that if a retake is not to be implemented, serious global repercussions about Filipino nurses will ensue. After the show aired, I received contradicting reactions from various bodies including the academe, the student bodies, some government officials and laypersons alike.

My advocacy to have an immediate Board retake failed and I was scorned by many. But to quote President Arroyo, it is, indeed, better to be right than to be popular. I hid from the public for a while, refused a number of media exposure, and lived a normal, decent life. It was only early this year that my cause came into fruition and my detractors finally get a dose of their own medicine as the CGFNS (a regulatory commission for foreign nurses planning to work abroad) demanded the much talked-about retake.

After too much wasted time, and more waiting for this year’s boards, I feel like I have become a part of Philippine Nursing history, albeit a trivial or a mundane one. But then again, maybe that’s just me.

*

P. S. My personal appreciations to Niki’s Blogspotting for the sweet words “I've always admired those people who can write so honestly, without fear of standing naked to the universe…,” Richard for featuring Unbearable Lightness, and KC for the triflex gloves. Complete list of Emmy nominees here and here.

Hmm. I might try this. I like some of the songs you picked, especially No One Else Comes Close. I sing that song all the time when we go to videoke bars.

whew igues that a good pick of music.. parang nagkataon lahat ah, hehe.

i think it's a good oppurtunity for filipinos na magkaraon ng nomination sa emmy, that was a good take of news here.

btw if nut mistaken by my understanding yew have stint of interview report for bandila? regarding with nursing students to retake their exams? hmm that was kewl indeed ;)

whee! i found out about the nomination of bandila last night. ayan with that, my friend is going to watch the emmy's live at nyc. i'm so proud because for the first time we have the philippines had an emmy nominee.

ay ikaw pala yun? harhar. napag-usapan kasi namin yung report na yun dati sa classroom..parang debate. kung retake or hindi na...syempre kampi naman ako sa iyo kasi the controversy would taint the credibility of filipino nurses.

di bale na if you got ridiculed. it was you who got the last laugh. =)

good luck to bandila. pero mas masya ako kung taga 7 ang nanominate hehe.

btw, you're welcome. pa-espesyal na ang triflex ngayon. =)

first, the post is very very good. i'd like to try posting something like that someday.

Gbu

This meme's quite interesting Ruff. I might have one for myself. Hehe.

By the way, thanks for your constant concern. I'm fine now, much much better than before. I've started to let go... Soon I'll be completely free from all of this. Sometimes we just need to have the resolve to decide and move forward from that decision.

I'm happy that you're not emotionally burdened. Enjoy life!

@MISTERHUBS: Hubs, when are we going to hear your first podcast? I demand Joe’s “No One Else Comes Close” to be your pilot offering ha. As for videoke bars, I prefer singing Surface’s “Shower Me With Your Love” or Cliff Richard’s “The Best of Me.” The latter’s one of my classic favourite too.

@DAZEDBLU*: Hmmm, about the meme, I made some daya on some of the iPod picks. Pero most of the songs listed are what really did play. Promise.
-Re: bandila, I would be much more euphoric if it gets the Emmy’s. Imagine the first Philippine nomination winning the Emmy’s for the 1st time? It will be a national celebration, I predict. Definitely a very good news. And yeah, I was in Bandila, and Korina Today in ANC, and Y-Speak, and GMA’s Debate, etc. etc. =)

ruff nurse-du-jour said...

@KC!!! Can I come with your friend? I so so wanted to watch the live primetime Emmy’s (have photo-ops with Heroes and Grey’s casts at that) and the international Emmy’s too. If Bandila wins, I want to be there to hear the verdict myself. Haha. As if I’ll ever be invited.
-Re the other thing: It took me a lot of brainstorming, self-reflection and psychoanalysis to come up with that decision. It was an ordeal of expediency versus integrity, and am happy to choose the latter. I’m just praying that everything will be worth it in the end.

@GORJESS: If news shows in GMA7 will tone down on showbiz and crime stories, they may have had the shots. Kapuso ka pala gorjess, because of Dr. Kho methinks?

ruff nurse-du-jour said...

@KC!!! Thanks again. I guess I wasn’t there. Or am I? If I’m not making discourses in front of nsg students, I’m either in media studios or hiding from them (in the Batasang Pambansa). My life evolves in that controversy before. =) Thank god that period’s finally over.

@CORY: I enjoyed that meme too. It was so fun to do. 1st RP nomination, I’m praying 1st RP win.
-NLE: Yeah it was really controversial. I’m just happy that justice is being served (to review center operators & bon members) and the NCLEX is now here (in RP) to stay. That’s enough reason to celebrate. I guess.

ruff nurse-du-jour said...

@PHILIPPE: Yeah, its definitely something we should be really proud of. And thank you philippe… from the bottom of my heart. You just sort of complimented me if I’m not mistaken. Thanks again, I really appreciate it. That was just flattering.

@ENGZ: Thanks engz. Feel free to do so. Yeah, unfortunately I am. The nursing profession in this country is hopeless. If radical changes would not be made, the exodus of nurses going abroad is bound to be relentless.

-Wow. You’re an RN, RM pala. Why are you not practicing? Sayang naman yung degree mo. Did you take midwifery too or you just applied with supplemental deliveries? Are you still in human resource by the way? Sorry if I seem too nosy. =) Thanks for the visit by the way. Really appreciated the compliments. =)

ruff nurse-du-jour said...

@DRAKE: Thanks for the visit drake. I guess I’m now okay, and I kinda’ moved on na. No use wallowing over past mistakes or wondering over the shoulda-coulda-woulda’s. Now, I have decided to pursue a “life of happiness” by living in a “right here, right now” basis. I've heard this philosophy in Heroes nga pala. That show had been really therapeutic by the way. Feel free to do the meme drake. Hope you’ll have fun doing it.

@ARIES: In reality aries, I think they do. Or not. Just kidding. Thanks for the informative (and entertaining) post by the way.

ruff nurse-du-jour said...

@RHONZKIE: I hope my meme put a little smile on your face. I could give your heart the cpr it needed but unfortunately, I could not do the repairing. Maybe savante/doc paul can. =)

@RUSS: Thanks RUSS. The waiting for the results, however, is consuming that strength. Still in a melancholic mood? Hurting? Maybe I could give you a hug. *HUUUGGGZZZ* okay, that was two. =)

@SAVANTE: I guess my disconnected DSL is synonymous with your “children misbehaving ordeal.” Which do you prefer having? As for me, I’ll stick with the DSL. =) You sure you’re not a pediatrician paul?

I really enjoyed that song- survey-meme-whatever.

Even though I’m not really part of the media world now, soon I’ll be, it’s great that a pinoy show was nominated in the Emmy awards right? Only means that Philippine journalism is on the right path, despite the fact that the country is one of the most dangerous places for journalist - and I forgot where I knew that thing. Lol.

FOR GOOD JOURNALISM!

yoshke said...

wahaha. LA ISLA BONITA at your funeral?! Ahlavet.

yoshke said...

and oh, na-proud ako bigla. BANDILA is the only newscast i watch. maigsi lang pero yung mga kelangan mo lang talaga malaman.

ruff nurse-du-jour said...

@ENGZ: Wow, you’re an achiever pala engz. Advanced congratulations on your promotion by the way. I want to apply for midwifery too pero I still lack like 10+ actual deliveries and I don’t have the time, and the energy to complete the requirements. Hehe. You’re always welcome engz. And don’t worry, mabait naman tlaga ako eh. Hahaha. =)

@SAISHO: I made some daya saisho, I didn’t include podcasts, audiobooks, etc. So far okay naman ang results. Hehe. The results came out really funny, and interesting too. =)
-I’m really, really interested in the media/entertainment industry, and despite being a nurse, I guess some aspect of my personality *privately loves the attention, the glamour, as well as the perils, in that kind of business. And yeah, the Bandila nomination is great. And about the latter, 2nd to Iraq I guess. FOR GOOD, AND SENSIBLE JOURNALISM! =)

ruff nurse-du-jour said...

@YOSHKE: Loved that song in videoke, but not in my funeral. And about BANDILA, yeah, maigsi lang sya but the information is so compact and concise. The news is concentrated and the discussion is in-depth. Not unlike other shows with repulsively-voiced hosts, heavily-swarmed crime stories, and tonloads of chismis stuffs, Bandila is judicious journalism at its best.

kc said...

i don't know if he's sure to come because someone just invited him over. but i asked him to take photos if ever he's coming. and that he's accompanying his mom there in NY for chemo sessions so he better take care of his mom first. =)

i'm really proud of bandila's nomination. whee!

that decision is well worth it. and besides, sticking up to what's right even if everyone else opposes to it, doesn't make you a bad person.

*lol* you're already hiding? jeez, i never realized how in demand you are. but i'm happy that you helped change the course of this wretched event in the philippine nursing history. cheers ruff!

ruff nurse-du-jour said...

@KC: Aaah, I see. I was thinking that he’ll be there *purely for fun. My bad. There’s a bigger, nobler purpose pala behind the trip. As for that, I hope everything goes well with his mom. I’ll send my prayers with him.
-I guess after all the turmoils, the problems, and the controversies, everything is going well na (at last). As for me, I have already been to too many trials and feel ko hindi ko na kakayanin ng isa pa. So many opportunities have lost, and too much time already wasted. The time to start is now, and I hope our passing for this boards will mark a new beginning to all of us. =) Congrats KC ha! And welcome to the real world of nursing. =) Cheers!!!
